Tech Tuesday: A Big Unboxing

UnBoxing-01

For months I’ve known it was time to get a new computer, but it’s a hard thing to pick a computer. This week I finally pulled the trigger and got a new computer. Well work pulled the trigger, but I picked what it was aimed at. I considered a number of options for my computer, from laptops to touchscreen desktops. In the end I settled on a Lenovo K450E. I’ve set up a lot of Lenovos for clients recently and I’ve been impressed with the quality of the hardware and their customer support.

I’m not sure why I took the unboxing pictures, I haven’t done it in a while, but I was just so excited to have a new computer, out came the camera. Looking them over it’s not that impressive. Desktops aren’t sexy. They seem to be the first casualty of the PC era as we move into the post PC era, an era of phones, phablets, tablets and even smart watches. People don’t buy desktops, they buy laptops. I thought long and hard about it, looking at different computers and in the end this was the best bang I could get for my buck.

The specs are modest,  i5-4460 3.20GHz, 8GB DDR3 Memory, 1TB + 8GB SSHD, DVDRW, 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750. It was the best all around machine I could find.  Have been using it for close to a week I have to say I’m really happy with it. Visual Studio and Netbeans, my current development environments both run great. I’ve installed Steam but haven’t had a chance to play any games yet.

I’ll end this post with a thought about my OS choice. I chose Windows 8, there were some windows 7 machines that caught my eye, but I didn’t want to pay to upgrade to 8. To be clear this is a desktop computer and will most likely never have a touch screen (though I have priced them out, I think it would be good for the kids). I choice windows 8 because it’s the best version of windows to date, even with the weird Modern/Metro apps and there touch first design. it is still the OS I choose for my computer. The windows 8 desktop has a number of enhancements that make it superior to windows 7, but I digress. This is an unboxing post, I’ll talk more about my feelings about Windows 8 in a future post.
