Geek Musing: NaNoWriMo

It’s November for some a time to grow a moustache,  or others it’s time to write a novel.  I’ve always wanted to grow a mustache for Movember but that would mean shaving off my goatee,  so that’s out of the question.  So instead I’ve taken on the daunting task of writing 50,000 words in 30 days.  A task I’ve tried to accomplish several times over the last 10 years.  I’ve only succeeded once.  Sure a few years I chose to blog every day instead of write a novel and that I have done successfully several times,  but the novel has eluded me.  So this year I’m back to noveling.

Before the month started I had visions of increasing my blog posts and working on my novel.  That hope quickly faded once the writing began.

Today is November 10.,  a third of the way into the challenge and I’m way behind in my word count.  The target is to write 1,667 words a day,  so that on the 30th you hit 50,000. My personal goal was 2,000 to make up any bad days.  Well they have. All been bad days.  As of bed time last night I was just shy of 5,000, about 10,000 short of where I should be. Part of my mind is telling g me I’m done.  I should give up.  Last year I Managed to get to 22,000 before it became clear that I wouldn’t be catching up. I gave up on the 22 second. It’s not very inspiring to know that last year at the end of the 9th I was over 6,000 words. So I’m more than 1,000 words behind my failed pass of last year. The one ray of hope that I have is last year I had quite a few early writing sessions, I didn’t produce as much as I wanted but I had a few hour blocks in front of the keyboard with an opportunity to write. This year, I’ve had only a couple. I’m hoping to fix that as the month continues. If I can I should be able to make up my words.

I do have to say that I’m really proud of Jacob, last here he wanted to take part but it never really worked out. This year is different. He started late but he’s working really hard on his story. I can’t wait till our next coffee shop writing session.
